old sign

Add to Memories Share
So I grunged it up and Lamb hung it above the hutch which I recently moved to the big green wall--we've needed something there for a long time.  The sign is pretty big, about 4' by 2'.  I'm happy with how it turned out, now I'm confident I can do a couple for the Rock Hall house.

birthday!

Add to Memories Share
Oh, yeah, I'm having such a nice day.  Got many lovely birthday shout-outs on facebook and LJ.  I'm not much on birthday celebrations (mine or others) but I'm inordinately pleased to be remembered.

I'm still wearing my nightgown.

I've been arting all day.

I really like the look of old weathered signs used as home decor.   Boy, would I like to find one to use as a headboard, like this pinterest photo: http://pinterest.com/pin/169659110932271818/

Then I thought, what the hey, I'm crafty.  So today I tried making one.  I used a piece of thin metal sheeting from a roll that was in the garage.  I tried to alligator/crackle the base coat by using wood glue--but it didn't crackle much at all.  I've finished the basic painting, now I have to faux-age it.

The look I'm going for is an amateur-ish, rustic, roadside sign.  I'll post a photo of the completed sign, here what I've got so far:

Rock Hall house

Add to Memories Share
We're here and brought the load of stuff we earmarked for this house.  I'm trying furniture arrangements in the open living/dining/kitchen area.  I reversed the dining and living area from the way the previous owner had it.

Need area rugs, for sure.  Will add and change out pieces as we spend more time here, but this is working for now

Rock Hall Bound

The Uhaul is parked in the drive-way, and today we'll start loading it.  All the pieces pictured are going (except the wall-hung dollhouse):

I'm trying to imagine it without the orange wall.  What if it was gray-ish?

Oh, and of course, BoKoo complements any decor:

I'm so happy that we're going be using this again.  My father built it for me a long, long time ago.  The design was based on an antique meal bin/bucket bench.  The split top opens and each side can hold two rows of file folders.  Pretty nifty, really.

I unearthed our old kitchen table from under a pile of debris in the garage.  With a few hours work, it (along with the plarned chairs) is ready for the Rock Hall house.  We're upcycling the old metal stand into a floor lamp . . . .

driftwood sailboats

While we were down on the dock Saturday, I took a break from fishing to pick up a few pieces of driftwood from the shoreline--and then made these sailboats!

Wrap plarn around chair seat from front to back.

Continue all the way across seat.

Next weave plarn from side to side, going over and under the front-to-back strips.

And that's as far as I got with the first five bags of plarn.  I estimate I'll need another 15 bags to finish the seat.

chair before and after

Add to Memories Share
In 1976 we bought a set of unfinished ladder-back chairs that cost, as I recall, $18.50 each.  For the next thirty-something years we used them daily with a succession of tables.  By the time we moved here they were looking the worse for wear--dull and dirty with frayed, unravelling cat-scratched seats.  So until this weekend they've been languishing in the garage . . .

small stuff

Y'know, considering I quit buying years ago, I still have an amazing amount of stuff. I've been rummaging around here looking for items to use in the Rock Hall house. Here's what I've unearthed so far--most still boxed-up from the Florida move.

The only practical, i.e., non-decorative, item is the Blue Willow dinnerware from the '90s.

Still considering what furniture to take. But there is a big weekly auction not far from Rock Hall . . . .

YAY!

We closed on the Rock Hall house yesterday.  Met the seller--a nice lady!  She is moving to Florida, closes on her new place in a couple weeks,  and expects to be out of the house by the end of April.  That works for us!  We were prepared to give her until June since we want to spend time there in July and August.

This has been the easiest, least stressful real estate transaction we've ever had.  The realtor, Lynn, who has been showing us RH properties for the last two years was also the listing agent--and we just love Lynn.  So even though she was officially the seller's agent, we were totally comfortable that she also had our best interests at heart.  She had a closing gift for us accompanied by a beautiful watercolor card she painted herself.

Weather-wise, it was a beautiful day for a 6-hour drive.

Here we are on the front porch of our new house:

just so you know

I'm still here.

We close on the Rock Hall house next week, but won't take occupancy for a couple months.  Other than getting the small backyard fenced, the house itself is move-in ready--except, of course, for furnishings.  I have a pinterest board for decorating ideas and cannot wait to get started.  I'm going to try to use things we already have and (oh my lord I can't believe I'm saying this) keep an eye out for flea market/antique mall finds.  I plan to be judicious with my purchases, in cost and quantity.

Last weekend Ronnie and his girls (and their little dog) came for a visit.  Ronnie was in Virginia for a job interview, and it was great to see him.  Andy came down from Aberdeen and the three guys worked on the pontoon boat on Saturday.  It was a really fun weekend--Ronnie's daughters are delightful and Chip their pomeranian gave BoKoo a run for his money!

more about Rock Hall

Add to Memories Share
I fell head-over-heels in love with the place from the moment we entered town.  Strange that I had overlooked it when we were moving from Florida.  We looked at other places on the Eastern Shore and it was certainly within our Balto-DC target area.  But Rock Hall isn't pass-through place, you have to be going there to get there.

So, being obsessed with all things Rock Hall, I found these blog entries from recent visitors--their assessments jibe pretty well with mine:

Interesting, no?

And, seemingly, one either LOVES Rock Hall or one really DOESN'T.  One of our friends that visited with us the first time was appalled we'd even consider it, and our realtor related a similar story about a couple who were in town less than an hour and said, "oh no, not for us!"  It is small---the "downtown" is one-block long.  It is out-of-the-way--no close-by malls or such. But it's got a for-real community vibe and a cool history and it's on the Bay and, damn, I can't wait to spend more time there.

I'm counting on it

the home inspection

Add to Memories Share
Bright and early Friday morning, Lamb and I headed to Rock Hall.  Could not have been a nicer day for a long drive, it was cool and clear.

We met Cliff the house inspector and Lynn, our realtor at the house.  The house! The house!  What a sweet, pretty house it is.  And after a very thorough, very professional going over, Cliff agreed (in so many words) it's a honey.  YAY!   On to the closing at the end of the month.

Most all the photos I took were no good--the damn camera was set on video when I thought I was snapping pictures.  (It was deja vu all over again, as the same thing happened when we looked at this house.)  I had to snag photos from the realtor listing for the slideshow in the previous post.

I think there's other stuff I want to say . . . .  But, for now

Sunday morning

I have a little time before our regular Skype call to The Cousins.  Lamb is packing for his trip to New Orleans--BoKoo has figured it out and is being pitifully clingy.  It's only for a couple nights, but we miss him so when he's away.

The house inspection is scheduled for Friday.  I cannot wait to see the house again.  The house is new-ish and was recently inspected so we're not anticipating any issues.  I plan to take a lot of photos and room measurements so I can start plotting and planning how to furnish the place.  Fun. fun. fun!

Watched The King's Speech last night.  Looking forward to Downton Abbey tonight.

Later, peeps.

Woo-hoo!

Add to Memories Share

Well, hot dang!  I can hardly believe it but it looks like we're getting a vacation home in Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore.

I've been obsessing about this for nearly two years, ever since we went there with Jane and Jerry.  It felt like our kind of place, someplace we might have chosen when we moved from Florida had we not had the dogs/cats/horses situation.  So our plan was to bide our time and watch the listings.  We were hoping for a house that was affordable enough to get as a second home to use to vacation there, and nice enough that it could be our forever home when we were ready to move from here.

Some 250 days ago, a likely candidate appeared, a house that looked super nice in the photos online.  Even though it was a bit above our target price, it sounded like a good value.  Then a couple months ago, the price was lowered.  We really had to go see it, and last Tuesday, we finally did.

Actually, we looked at three houses.  I told the realtor it was like being in a particularly good episode of HGTV's House Hunters.  We looked at our target house, and one priced a bit lower and one priced a bit higher (but with marina amenities).

"Our" house was fabulous!  Lots of upgrades, every thing we could ever hope to have but would have been embarrassed to admit to for fear of sounding picky-ass--open plan, hardwood floors, dual sinks and separate shower and toilet in master bath, gas range in kitchen, garage, screened porch, on an in-town but still private lot.  It is so stinking awesome!

So we made an offer on Friday, and this morning, the seller accepted it!  It really seems to be a go.  Holy moly, we could spend the summer there.
